PORTUGAL North or south - How about Sagres? / Norte ou sul - Que tal Sagres?

ENGLISH - Portugal is one of my favorite countries in the world. I love everything about it: food, wine, weather, people, culture, history - and the list goes on and on. Normally, the main destiny for someone being there for the first time is Lisbon, the capital and the largest city. But Portugal has much more to show and travellers with time to explore the country sometimes face the hard choice between go north or south. It is hard to decide what else to see and do considering so many options this country has to offer but let's pick one and start with the extreme south: Sagres.

When the Age of Discoveries* started the King of Portugal, known as Don Henry the Navigator created the School of Navigation in Sagres. Although the school was destroyed (probably by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake) and there is no register about its exact location, the military fortress is still there, always ready to welcome visitors. Inside the fortress there is a chapel built in the 14th century and a former monastery from the 16th century, but the most impressive is the breathtaking view of the ocean over the stunning cliffs.

Sagres is located in the southwest Algarve, in the mediterranean part of Portugal. It is a year round destination with long summers and and mild winters. Besides history, culture, good restaurants and nice architecture in the old and charming little towns, Algarve also offers clean and scenic beaches. If you don't know what to do in your next getaway, remember: Portugal is always a good idea!

PORTUGUÊS - Portugal é um dos meus países favoritos no mundo. Eu amo tudo sobre ele: comida, vinho, clima, povo, cultura, história e a lista continua. Normalmente, o principal destino para alguém que viaja para lá pela primeira vez é Lisboa, a capital e a maior cidade do país. Mas Portugal tem muito mais a oferecer e viajantes com tempo para explorar o país algumas vezes enfrentam a difícil escolha entre ir norte ou sul. É difícil decidir o que mais ver e fazer considerando as muitas opções que este país oferece, mas vamos escolher um e começar com o extremo sul: Sagres.

Quando a Era dos descobrimentos começou, o Rei de Portugal, conhecido como Dom Henrique, o Navegador, criou a Escola de Navegação em Sagres. Embora a escola tenha sido destruída (provavelmente pelo terremoto em Lisboa em 1755) e não haja registro sobre sua localização exata, a fortaleza militar continua lá, sempre pronta para receber os visitantes. Dentro do forte há uma capela construída no século XIV e um antigo monastério do século XVI, mas o mais impressionante é a vista de tirar o fôlego do oceano acima dos penhascos estupendos.

Sagres está localizada no sudoeste do Algarve, na parte mediterrânea de Portugal. É um destino para o ano inteiro com longos verões e invernos amenos. Além de história, cultura, bons restaurantes e arquitetura bacana nas antigas e charmosas cidadezinhas, o Algarve também oferece praias limpas e com belas paisagens.
