ENGLISH - Palermo is a mesmerizing city in the South of Italy, in the island of Sicily. Worldwide known for its architecture, Greek temples, Arabic influences and Gothic churches, it incorporates a variety of styles, food and cultures that translate the territorial invasions and conquests of Romans, Normans, Byzantines, Spanish, and Arabs along the centuries.

As the land of good food and good life (il buon cibo e la dolce vita) – I recently read an Italian quote saying “la vita e’ troppo breve per mangiare e bere male”- life is too short to eat and drink badly- Palermo hosts and offers three main local food markets and mouthwatering street food. You cannot miss arancine, stigghiole and taste pastries and cannoli in any of the bars around the city.

The main markets are Ballaro’, Capo and Vucciria, the latest one is very lively at nights as well. Vucciria means “voices” in Sicilian language, visualizing people talking in the streets while buying food and negotiating with the local vendors on the fresher eggplants, tomatoes, mozzarella and shrimps to make delicious Melanzane alla parmigiana, layers of fried eggplants, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, or to make pasta alla norma, pasta with eggplants and mozzarella cheese, or to simply prepare un fritto misto with fried shrimps, squids, clams and anchovies. Flavors, spices, colors and people talking mix up in these open-air markets, recreating the familiarity and the warmth of a city that takes care of you through its vast offer of low-price, fresh and genuine food.

Sicily is also very well known for its population sweet tooth. At Bar Touring (in Piazzetta della porta reale) , a must visit to get arancine ( huge fried rice balls stuffed with meat, beans, or ham & cheese, or tomato & mozzarella cheese) cassata siciliana, along with cannolo siciliano, prepared with ricotta cheese and caramelized fruit, almonds-based pastries and marzipan in a fruit-vegetable shapes are a joy of the palate.

Along with the gastronomic tour of the city, in Palermo you can breathe culture and history. Invaded by many populations, you can experience the perfect harmony (conquered after several centuries of conquests) of different cultures living together and understanding life complexity. Starting from the houses of entertainment, both Teatro Massimo and Teatro Politeama where people gather to enjoy ballet, opera and modern pieces, you then visit the Cathedral and the Palazzo Reale (or Palace of the Normans) where religions communicate to one another in a synergy and in tolerance (in palazzo Reale, the cappella Palatina was firstly built to put in contact Islam and Catholicism).

The Sicilian people are very welcoming and they make you feel at home. With a heart open to cultures and to tourism, the harbor and the sea reflect their open-mindedness and the receptivity in communicating to people. Marked by the plague of organized crime, the city suffers from lack of restoration of some wondrous and aged buildings. Cultural heritage and preservation are keys for the flourishing of the economy and for the acceleration of social welfare.

Of Sicily I will remember the flavor of the oranges and the lemons in the market, the Sicilian language- especially in the food markets- the calm of the sea in the inexorable vortex of life happenings, the clothes hanging outside the balcony of the houses, and a big hopeful sign on a building next to the Capo market: Non dimenticare Palermo. Sabores, temperos, cores e pessoas falando se misturam nestes mercados ao ar livre, recriando a familiaridade e o calor de uma cidade que cuida de você através da sua vasta oferta de alimentos frescos, saudáveis e acessíveis.

A Sicília é também conhecida por uma população que adora doces. O Bar Touring (em Piazzetta di porta reale), é uma visita obrigatória para comer arancine (bolinhos enormes de arroz frito recheados com carne, feijão, presunto e queijo ou tomate e queijo mussarela) cassata siciliana, juntamente com cannoli siciliani, preparados com queijo ricotta e frutas caramelizadas, doces à base de amêndoas e marzipan em uma forma de frutos de vegetais, todos são a alegria do paladar.

Junto com o roteiro gastronômico da cidade, você pode respirar a cultura e a história de Palermo. Invadida por muitas populações, você pode experimentar a perfeita harmonia (conquistada após vários séculos de conquistas) de diferentes culturas que vivem juntas e compreendem a complexidade da vida. Da Sicília vou lembrar o sabor das laranjas e limões no mercado, o idioma siciliano - especialmente no mercado de alimentos - a calma do mar no vórtice inexorável dos acontecimentos da vida, as roupas penduradas fora das varanda das casas, e um grande sinal de esperança em um prédio ao lado do mercado de Capo onde está escrito: Non dimenticare Palermo.
