ARGENTINA - Jesuit Missions / Missões Jesuíticas

ENGLISH - The Jesuit Missions were created by the Jesuit Order during the 17th and 18th centuries. Around 30 organized settlements were distributed in the territories of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia.

The strategy was to send priests of different religious orders to evangelize the Americas, bringing Christianity to indigenous communities. Some small cities became self sufficient and fearing a parallel society the Jesuits were expelled by Pope Clement XIV in 1767.

In San Ignacio Mini (Argentina) the ruins are very well preserved and it is possible to understand how it was the daily life in the missions. Around 250 km from the Brazil-Argentina border (Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil and Puerto Iguazu in Argentina) it is easy to drive, to take a bus or to take a day tour to get there. It is a good idea for a day trip if you are interested in history and culture.

PORTUGUÊS - As Missões Jesuíticas foram criadas pela Ordem Jesuíta durante os séculos XVII e XVIII. Por volta de 30 assentamentos foram distribuídos nos territórios da Argentina, Brasil, Paraguai, Uruguai e Bolívia.

A estratégia era enviar padres de diferentes ordens religiosas para evangelizar as Américas, trazendo o Cristianismo para as comunidades indígenas. Algumas das pequenas cidades se tornaram autossuficientes e temendo uma sociedade paralela os Jesuítas foram expulsos pelo Papa Clemente XIV em 1767.

Em San Ignacio Mini (Argentina) as ruínas estão muito bem preservadas e é possível entender como era a vida cotidiana nas missões. Aproximadamente há 250 km a partir da fronteira Brasil-Argentina (Foz do Iguaçu no Brasil e Puerto Iguazu na Argentina) é fácil chegar lá de carro ou pegar um ônibus ou ainda fazer um tour de um dia. É uma boa ideia para um dia de passeio se você está interessado em história e cultura.
