First impressions on Senegal: sports, kizomba, thieboudienne, boats and taxis / Primeiras impressões

I landed in Senegal 1 month ago. My desire to learn, travel and give back never stops.

Senegal is a wonderful country on the West African Coast, overlooking the Atlantic ocean, with a warm climate and marvelous beaches populated with boys and kids playing football at each hour of the day.

Dakar is a city in constant movement, where the only safer means of transport is the taxi. Millions of taxi run around the city, day and night, with the well-known "embouteillages”- traffic jams of the city.

The city is next to the sea, best bet to rest after a day’s work. The city offers a variety of activities to do, including surfing, visits of islands around the city, the island of Gorée suggested, and nice bars to eat by the beach.

People are calm and quiet, and they always want to start talking with you in the streets. The pace and rhythm are slow during the day, but at night Senegalese people are very fond of dancing African and Latin American rhythms. The most popular dances are kizomba, an original rhythm of South-West Africa, originally from the country of Angola, where the songs are sang in Portuguese and the dance is in couple. Senegalese nights have also lots of salsa and bachata, Latin American rhythms, always very much fun.

Being a city that attracts many tourists for its beaches and for its climate, both fishing and production of peanuts are two very productive economic activities. The national dish is “thieboudienne”, prepared with fish, rice tomato sauce. The taste is peculiar, with additional ingredients as onions, carrots, cabbage, manioc and peanut oil. In the Senegalese local language, Wolof, the word thieboudienne means "rice" (ceeb) and "fish" (jen). It is a quite spicy dish!

With boats and pirogues, the city has interesting tourist destinations, such as to the island Madeleine, the Ngor Island, and the well-known Island of Gorée, UNESCO World Heritage site. On the island you can visit the house of slaves, with the history of the slavery during the centuries.

The word Senegal comes from Sunu Gall, which means the "pirogue". Land of fishermen, considered a country of peace and political stability, it has everything to live, observe people, interact with them and understand a new culture, a new language and a new, different style of perceiving our lives.

Cheguei no Senegal hà um mês. Meu desejo de aprender, viajar e retribuir nunca acaba.

Senegal é um país maravilhoso na costa oeste africana, com vista para o Oceano Atlântico, com um clima quente e praias maravilhosas, povoadas de crianças que jogam ao futebol ao longo de todo o dia.

Dakar é uma cidade sempre em movimento, onde o único transporte público seguro é o taxi. Tem milhões de taxis que rodam pela cidade de dia e de noite, com os conhecidos “embouteillages”- engarrafamentos - em cada canto da cidade.

A cidade está perto do mar, a melhor maneira de descansar após um dia de trabalho. Tem diferentes atividades para fazer, incluindo o surf, visitas para as ilhas em volta da cidade como a já sugerida Ilha de Gorée , e bares para comer perto da praia.

As pessoas são calmas e tranquilas, e tem sempre vontade de falar com vc nas ruas. O ritmo é mais lento durante o dia, mas a noite os senegaleses gostam muito de dançar ritmos africanos e latino-americanos. As danças favoritas são o kizomba, um ritmo originario do sudoeste da Africa, mais precisamente de Angola, onde as músicas são portuguesas e as danças são a dois. Tem também muita salsa e bachata, ritmos latinos americanos, sempre divertidos.

Sendo uma cidade que atrai muitos turistas pelas praias e o clima, a pesca é uma atividade econômica muito produtiva, bem como a produção de amendoim. O prato nacional é a “thieboudienne”, preparado com peixe, arroz e molho de tomate. O sabor é peculiar, com os seguintes ingredientes adicionais: cebolas, cenouras, couve, mandioca e óleo de amendoim. Na lingua local do Senegal, o Wolof, a palavra thieboudienne significa “arroz” (ceeb) e “peixe” (jen). É um prato bastante temperado!

Com barcos e canoas, a cidade tem destinos turísticos interessantes, como a ilha da Madeleine, a ilha de Ngor, e a conhecida Ilha de Gorée, patrimonio cultural da UNESCO. Nesta última ilha há a história da escravidão durante os séculos.

A palavra Senegal vem de Sunu Gall, que significa a “canoa”. Terra de pescadores e considerado um país de paz e estabilidade política, tem tudo para viver, observar as pessoas, interagir com elas e entender uma nova cultura, um novo idioma e um diferente estilo de perceber as nossas vidas.
